As China seeks the development of a low carbon economy, Shanghai is pioneering itself as a role model. Next month's Shanghai World Expo will emphasize the importance of a low carbon footprint by banning fossil fueled vehicles from running on expo parks.

If you are visiting Shanghai during the expo, this small electronic vehicle will be your primary choice of transport.

A low carbon lifestyle is the new theme, as the expo sets to employ electronic and hybrid vehicles in the park. The banning of fossil fueled vehicles is not the only hurdle for traditional transport. Parking will be limited to only 5,000 spaces at the entrances. Visitors are being encouraged to take public transportation.

Shanghai resident Tang Fuli said, "As the host city of the expo, we support the measures. I will ride my bicycle. It will also be good for my health."

The park is also turning to the sun for power. Solar generators have been installed in the park, providing most of its electricity. Semi-conductors have been installed to provide more than 80 percent of the park's lighting. Rainfall is being collected for irrigation. Even the Huangpu River has been mobilized.

Chief Planner of Expo Park Wu Zhiqiang said, "As the river runs through the park, we are using river water for cooling, to replace air conditioners. It's cooling the city in a natural way. Otherwise, the cooling of the huge buildings in the park could be very power intensive."

Outside the park, the whole city is joining the low carbon campaign. Shanghai has over 420 kilometers of subway tracks in service, covering almost all corners of the city. The city has also shut down more than 800 high power consumption factories every year. Authorities are doing everything to seek a cleaner, and more liveable city.
