Jarmila Groth has become the fifth Australian into the second round of the French Open women's singles event after cleaning up Chinese Taipei's Yung-Jan Chan 6-2, 6-3 at Roland Garros on Tuesday, Sydney Morning Herald reported on Wednesday.

The World No.107 started positively by breaking her 83rd-ranked opponent early and never let up on a night that saw the biggest upset of the tournament so far when Japan's Kimiko Date Krumm eliminated the ninth-seeded 2008 and 2009 finalist Dinara Safina in three sets.

Groth's career high rank was 57, achieved on July 6, 2009. Before obtaining Australian Citizenship, Groth competed for Slovakia.

Earlier, another Australian, Anastasia Rodionova, booked her place in the second round after defeating Russian Ekaterina Makarova 6-3, 6-2.

The world No.92 was too strong in the hot conditions, winning in one hour and 21 minutes.

She joined compatriots Sam Stosur, Sophie Ferguson and Carsten Ball as first-round winners.

On Monday, Stosur shook off a sluggish start to demolish Romanian qualifier Simona Halep. The Queenslander accounted for Halep 7-5, 6-1 in just over an hour.

Fellow Australians Peter Luczak, Jelena Dokic and Alicia Molik were all bundled out at the first hurdle.
