Getty Conservation Institute: Dunhuang Preservation Project
The Getty Conservation Institute (GCI) is part of the Getty Foundation, established in 1985. The Dunhuang Academy has collaborated with the Getty Conservation Institute for nearly 30 years since 1989. The two parties have engaged in long-term research project cooperation, particularly in the preservation of the murals in Cave 85 of the Mogao Caves, which lasted seven years. This collaboration addressed many challenges previously encountered in mural restoration, ranging from value assessment of the murals to the preparation of restoration materials and successful restoration efforts. Neville Agnew, a conservation expert on the Dunhuang project, received the Chinese government's Friendship Award and the International Scientific and Technological Cooperation Award for his contributions.
The GCI boasts advanced concepts and extensive experience in the field of cultural heritage conservation. Through project collaboration, China and the United States found great resonance in improving mural restoration techniques, restoration processes, and management philosophies. Working together on projects and employing innovative methods and model protection strategies, participants have summarized a comprehensive set of advanced mural protection concepts and site management methods that align with international practices while being suitable for China's specific conditions.
