Digital Dunhuang

Since the late 1980s, the Dunhuang Academy has championed the concept of "Digital Dunhuang" by collaborating with domestic and international universities and research institutions to explore the digitization and preservation of immovable cultural heritage. The aim is to utilize computer and digital imaging technologies to achieve the permanent preservation and sustainable use of Dunhuang cave relics.

The "Digital Dunhuang" project can be divided into four main realms: digitization of the Dunhuang caves, the "Digital Dunhuang" digital asset management system, a permanent storage system, and a resource repository. This project employs advanced technology and concepts of relic protection to comprehensively digitize, process, and store materials related to the Dunhuang Caves, establishing a diversified, intelligent digital resource repository for cave relics, which is shared globally through the internet and mobile internet.

The year 2016 witnessed the launch of Digital Dunhuang- Resource Library (https://e-dunhuang.com/), featuring high- definition panoramic virtual tours of 30 classic caves. In 2017, the English version of the Resource Library was launched, drawing users from 18 countries worldwide. In 2022, the world's first blockchain-based open-access platform for digital cultural heritage, the "Digital Dunhuang Resource Library," was launched. By 2024, the Dunhuang Research Archive—a comprehensive collection of global Dunhuang studies research and primary source materials— went live. This has greatly facilitated the scientific protection of the Dunhuang Caves and the rational, orderly use of data resources, providing researchers with convenient access to information while breaking the constraints of time and space, thus meeting public demand for exploration and appreciation.

數字敦煌

敦煌研究院自20世紀80年代末開始提出“數字敦煌”的構想，并與海內外高等院校及科研機構密切合作，探索研究不可移動文物數字化保護，旨在利用計算機技術和數字圖像技術，實現敦煌石窟文物的永久保存、永續利用。

“數字敦煌”項目主要包括敦煌石窟數字化、“數字敦煌”數字資產管理系統、永久存儲體系和資源庫四個方面。該項目利用先進的科學技術與文物保護理念，對敦煌石窟和相關文物進行全面的數字化采集、加工和存儲，構建出一個多元化與智能化相結合的石窟文物數字化資源庫，并通過互聯網和移動互聯網面向全球共享。

2016 年，“數字敦煌資源庫”（https://e-dunhuang.com/）上線，推出30個經典洞窟高清全景虛擬漫游；2017年，“數字敦煌資源庫”英文版上線，訪問用戶來自全球約18個國家。2022年全球首個基于區塊鏈的數字文化遺產開放共享平臺“數字敦煌素材庫”上線，2024年匯集全球范圍內敦煌學研究成果與相關一手資料的“敦煌學研究文獻庫”上線。“數字敦煌”平臺極大地促進了敦煌石窟、敦煌資料的科學保護和數據資源合理有序的利用，為科研人員提供了便捷的信息獲取渠道，同時打破時間和空間的限制，滿足了公眾游覽欣賞需求。
