China will adjust its development strategies of education, science and technology to better adapt to the new economic situation following its entry to the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Premier Zhu Rongji made the remarks at the 10th meeting of the State Leading Group for Science, Technology and Education, which was held in Beijing on Thursday.
Top Chinese leaders, including Vice-Premier Li Lanqing and State Councillor Wu Yi, also attended the meeting.
China's entry to the WTO will have an important influence on the country's economy, society and science and technology.
Development strategies should therefore gradually stress innovation, Zhu said.
In those key scientific projects that will be carried out, targets include creating new technologies, inventing new products and strengthening new industries.
The approval process of patent rights will be speeded up to increase the quantity and quality of China's new product ideas and strengthen its competitiveness scientifically and economically, he said.
Zhu also stressed the importance of updating the country's technical standards system to improve China's scientific status in the world.
As for education, the premier said the country will continue to support students burdened with financial difficulties to return to school. Institutions, enterprises and individuals are encouraged to make donations to education funds.
