Beijing has reported major progress on transportation infrastructure during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025). The city announced that its rail network has expanded to 1,244 kilometers, now the longest in the nation.
The sub-center integrated transportation hub will be ready for operation by the end of the year. This will round out a citywide system anchored by eight railway stations and two airports, with all stations to be linked to the subway network, according to city officials.
Over five years, Beijing opened 19 new subway segments totaling 180 kilometers. Together with 365 kilometers of suburban rail, the metro network now includes 29 operating lines, 524 stations, and 100 transfer stations. Average weekday ridership exceeds 11 million, and 11 lines run at intervals under two minutes.
Full automatic operation has expanded rapidly. Five new lines, including Lines 3, 12, 17, 19, and the Daxing Airport line, now operate at the highest automation level.
Integrated travel continues to improve: 90% of subway stations offer bus connections within 50 meters, and 352 bus routes now dedicatedly serve schools, hospitals, and tourist sites. Cross-line security checks at Beijing West and Qinghe stations make transfers smoother.
Regional connectivity has strengthened across Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei. High-speed routes such as the Beijing-Harbin and Beijing-Xiong'an lines as well as the cross-city subway Line 22 have helped establish a 1-to-1.5-hour intercity circle. A one-hour commuting zone around Beijing is beginning to take shape.
The road network also expanded. The whole region added 108 kilometers of expressways, raising the total to 1,276 kilometers. In Beijing, urban roads rose by 140 kilometers to 6,296 kilometers; and with an increase of around 200 kilometers, the overall length of highways has surpassed 22,000 kilometers.
Targeted traffic governance has eased congestion citywide. Beijing upgraded access around 61 major transit hubs and improved traffic conditions near schools, hospitals, scenic sites, and shopping areas. More than 100 decongestion projects were completed, and 70 dead-end streets were opened.
Parking space in central districts has grown significantly, with 97,000 new spots added in the recent three years. Revitalization of 300 under-bridge spaces has further improved urban look.
Intelligent mobility advanced as well. Beijing expanded its 600-square-kilometer autonomous driving demonstration zone and launched regular autonomous shuttle services. All signals within Fifth Ring Road and in the sub-center are now fully networked.
Railway station areas underwent major upgrades. Illegal structures were removed, public space was expanded, and wayfinding systems were redesigned. More than 76,500 square meters of new greenery were added across major station areas.
